Making a Difference in the World of Fast Fashion

This week we talked about true cost and true price and the reason we can buy really cheap clothes or food. Fast fashion has been a really big contributor to waste and over consumption but in the Philippines two new brands called Lazy Fare and Lucy in the Sky are looking into making a difference in the industry.

  • In this article, they said the businesses were ran by three sisters who have had a long history of working in the garments business and their approach to creating a more sustainable future is to work exclusively with local manufacturers and source their materials locally and ethically to be more conscious of their footprint.
  • They keep everything local by employing local manufacturers who provide quality work and fair treatment and compensation of the employees.
  • The garments they make are not only stylish but they're all made out of reclaimed fabric rescued from landfills or from the excess from other warehouses. The pieces also range from 100 to 200 Philippine Pesos (which is about $1.5-2 USD) so they're making really affordable pieces without adding on any hidden costs.
  • If you look at fast fashion brands such as Forever 21 or H&M you might notice that some tags say "Made in the Philippines." So the sisters learned more about international fast fashion brands, where they were being manufactured, overproduction and other factors that lead to scrapping and dumping perfectly usable fabric and used this knowledge to create a business that would eliminate waste and unfair treatment of workers.
I hope more businesses begin to follow in their footsteps to create a more sustainable industry and society.
